Vernell Hodge was born on March 26, 1952 in Gary, Indiana to the union of Mary Hodge and
Reverend Wade Hodge, Sr.
He received his early education from Banneker Elementary School and Beckman Junior High
School and graduated from Westfield High School in 1971.
Vernell was baptized into Christ at an early age. He attended Greater Light Missionary Baptist
Church under the leadership of his father, Reverend Hodge.
During his early adulthood, he moved to Houston, Texas in search of better opportunities. He
worked at various entities throughout his career until he retired from Enterprise Car Rental
as a supervisor. After retirement, he re-entered the workforce as a security officer with Allied
Universal.
Vernell was a die-hard Indianapolis Colts fan and enjoyed partaking in smack talk in defense
of his team. He was often seen sporting Colts gear from head to toe.
On July 22, 2022, Vernell entered into eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his parents,
ten siblings (Julia Clay, Lucy Murphy, Viola Christopher, Wade Hodge, Jr., Isaac Hodge, Sr., and
Johnny Hodge all of Gary, Indiana, Creola Burch, Ruby Hanyard, James Hodge, and William
Hodge, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
He leaves to cherish his precious memory are his wife, Marjorie Hodge; his loving children, Keir
Thompson of Houston, Texas, Sharlyn Hodge, of Houston, Texas, Vernell Hodge (Shonna) of
South Bend, Indiana, Darnell Hodge (Nicole) of Indianapolis, Indiana, LaTasha Fields (Jason)
of Verona, Wisconsin, JaQuay Wyatt (Brodrick) of Spring, Texas and Carl Hodge of Houston,
Texas. He also leaves behind 40 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and his siblings, Lee
Hodge of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Velma Aaron of Power Springs, Georgia. In addition,
Vernell will be missed by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
