On May 25, 1953 in Victoria, Texas, Sylvester Ellis and Melba Ruby Dean Carrol Ellis were blessed by the birth of their second child, Sylvia Diane Ellis.
At an early age, Sylvia accepted Christ at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. L.B. Elliot.
Known as “Diane” by family and friends, she was educated at F.W. Gross Elementary and Junior High School. She graduated from Stroman High School in 1971 where she participated in the art program, choir, and the Raider Belles drill team. After graduation, she began working as a nurse’s aide at Citizen’s Hospital and worked as a medication aide at the Maggie Johnson Nursing Center for more than ten years before retirement. During her tenure, her patients grew to love her, dearly.
Sylvia was a creative soul. She enjoyed catching people off guard and taking their picture, baking cakes, and sometimes, sewing. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She didn’t like the idea of being called “Grandma,” so she became “Mama D” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On Sunday, September 15, 2024, Sylvia Diane Ellis Browning gained her wings. She was preceded in transition by her daughter (Sherri Ellis), parents, and two brothers (Sylvester, Jr. and Edwin Ellis),
Left to honor the life, love and memory of Sylvia “Mama D” Browning are her son, Jason Browning and his father, Ernest J. Browning; grandchildren: Zoey Browning, Zhuri Browning, Re’Kyea Hooks (Josten); great-grandchildren: Daelyinn, Raegan, and Kai’Lynn Hooks; two brothers, Rev. Harold Ray Ellis, Kelvin Ellis (Terri); one sister, Jacquelin Ellis; three uncles: Douglas Ray Ellis, Willie Ellis (Patricia), Gary Ellis, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
