Mary Jo Price was born on October 18, 1952 in Crockett, Texas to the waiting arms of Lydia and Clemmie Price. She attended Crockett Independent School District. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Union Prairie Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.
Mary married Bobby Ray McCullough in Crockett, Texas. Later in life, she relocated to Houston Texas and built a life full of faith, family and service. There, she met and married George Brown. George was a musician and Mary was the talkative, outgoing, life of the party. She was an opinionated, bossy, caring, kind-hearted, giving person that never met a stranger.
Mary kept a calendar of birthdays and made sure everyone received a token of love on their birthday. Mary united with First Outreach Missionary Baptist Church and was a faithful wife to George Brown for over 30 years.
Mary was employed by First City National Bank in downtown Houston for 20 years. Thereafter, she joined the staff of Texas Commerce Bank following First City’s selling of assets to Texas Commerce. She took pride in her appearance. Her hair, clothing, high heel shoes, and matching accessories were always on point. She dressed to impress and incorporated animal print in her attire, and her living space. Mary worked for Texas Commerce until her health became a concern.
Following her retirement, Mary moved her membership to Resurrection Missionary Baptist Church to fellowship with her niece and nephew. As a dedicated member, she served on the kitchen committee, worked with the youth, and assisted in children’s church.
Mary met Kenneth Collins, who was fascinated with her. His exact words, “I prayed for a good wife”. They were united in holy matrimony in November of 2011. Ken and Mary worked together as a team reaching out to the sick, elderly, and those experiencing difficult circumstances. They provided support where needed. Ken passed away peacefully at home with Mary by his side in November of 2014 after a battle with cancer.
In 2015, Mary stepped in the light and joined Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Russell Hutchinson, Jr. She was a faithful member until her health failed. She was an excellent example of showing up when it mattered. She gave generously through her time and service showing love through home-cooked meals, baked goods, advice, and phone calls just to check in.
As Mary’s illness progress, she moved into the Capstone facility in September 2022. She enjoyed being busy. She took the time to visit other residents and assist them with their needs and excelled in activities and contributed to holiday decorating. She was named the best dressed resident. Whether gardening or walking, she enjoyed the outside and had a daily walking regime that was featured in the Capstone newsletter for her fitness. There came a time where Mary was no longer able to attend church services outside of the facility and as the window of life closed in on her illness, she continued being a woman of faith and continued services with the Holman Street Baptist Church mission department. The Holman Street ministry visited the facility regularly. Mary was named honorary member of the mission department. She knew that only what she did for Christ would last.
