Her Story
Lula Mae Green entered this world on March 8, 1940, to the union of John and Lula Baker Green. Affectionately known as “PeeWee” by family and close friends, she was raised in the Hopewell Community on the outskirts of Crockett, Texas and received her formal education from Hopewell Gudeblye Training School and Crockett I.S.D.
At an early age, Lula Mae was introduced to the Lord at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. She was taught the value of serving the Lord, loving the family and hard work. She carried these principles with her throughout her life.
Lula Mae united in Holy Matrimony to John B. Wortham on March 5, 1960, and they were blessed with 43 years together. Not only was she a devoted and faithful wife to John B., she was also a loving and caring mother to Johnny Roy Green.
Lula Mae and John made their home in Pennington, Texas. She united with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she dutifully served in many Christian capacities such as church secretary, mission president, cemetery finance committee member, and choir member, just to name a few. Unofficially, she was the all-around go-to person for any and everything needed in the church.
Lula Mae was an amazing cook. She loved cooking for her family and church, especially church homecomings where she laid out a spread of food and desserts that would satisfy anyone’s taste buds. A few of her specialties were mustard greens, purple hull peas, and sweet potatoe pies. She loved fishing, tending to her chickens, and spending time with her family and friends. She never met a stranger and was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She lived a full and happy prosperous life surrounded by the people she loved and those who loved her.
She was employed by Memorial Medical Center for over 40 years where she worked diligently in the cafeteria as a dietitian ensuring that the patients received healthy and well-balanced nutritional meals.
