Lee Hicks Obituary

Lee Alton Hicks was born on April 5, 1926 in Grapeland, Texas, the oldest son of Pearl L.  Gilmore.

Lee graduated from W. R. Banks High School furthered his studies by earning a Bachelor’s degree from Mary Allen College and later, a Master’s degree from Prairie View & M University.  In the midst of his endeavors, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for two years.  He accepted the Lord as his savior at Cedar Branch Baptist Church in Grapeland.

Lee married Mattie L. Harris in 1952.  This union was blessed with two sons: Vincent Lee and Marcus Wayne.  The family became members of Lane Tabernacle CME in Galena Park, Texas where he served in many capacities including Chairman of the Trustee Board, member of the Steward Board, president of the choir, and Sunday school  treasurer.  His most recent church was Silverlake Church in Pearland, Texas.  Living a Christian life and sharing a Christian home,  Lee and Mattie were charter members of a gospel singing group called The Christian Harmoniers, for over ten years. They traveled over the hills and plains to various locations with other group members, who were also their cousins, spreading the gospel through music.  His deep bass voice was a wonderful addition to the group.

For over ten years, Lee worked at Floyd West Insurance and for twenty-six (26) years in the Galena Park Independent School District as a beloved teacher, counselor and bus driver.  In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, watching westerns and sports, especially the Texans, Rockets and Astros, solving  puzzles and tending to his yard.

On December 5, 2025, Bro. Lee Alton Hicks was called from labor to reward.  He was  preceded in  transition by his mother, siblings (Jonathan Davis, Sr. of Hempstead,  Lola Whittaker of Amarillo, Elpressley and Clara Leonard of Houston).

Left to honor his life and cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, friend, companion, and travel partner, Mattie L. Hicks; sons: Vincent Hicks (Shenita) and Marcus Hicks (Johnetta); grand-children: KaLeah Hicks, Jaylon Hicks, Alexis Hicks, and Ashley Hicks; niece, Varie Wilburn; brother-in-law, Clemon Whittaker of Amarillo, Texas; Louise Davis of Hempstead, Texas and a host of other family members and dear friends.
