Remembering Katie

Katie Marie Burns was born on November 18, 1948 in Grapeland, Texas to Annie Mae Burns-Alexander.  She attended the Grapeland area schools and was baptized at Cedar Branch Baptist Church in Grapeland.

After moving to Houston, Texas, Katie began working in various capacities..  During her early years, she worked at Texas Bar-B-Cue, the original Wyatt’s Cafeteria, as a food server, and the Session Motel. She met and married Arthur L. Payton and together, they provided a loving home for their children.

Katie was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Her greatest joys were her children, their children, and her family.  She had a heart of gold and possessed a fun-loving spirit.  She loved gardening, arts and crafts and cooking.

On January 20, 2023, Katie entered into eternal rest.  She was preceded in transition by her parents, husband, son (Sherman Payton), three brothers (John Gilmore, James L. Burns and Herbert Burns); two nephews (Kenneth Allen and Edward Burns), two sisters (Louise Burns-Allen and Vernie Jean Johnson) and two great-grandchildren (Ariel Smith and Dereon Smith).

Left to honor her life and cherish her memory are her daughters, Shennel Burns (Theran), Salina Payton (Cleveland) and Shamil Marshall (Michael); grandchildren, Ganel Nelson, Sherril Burns, Trishel Burns, Darnell Burns, Shakira Bluncson, Artazia Chandler, Artavion Chandler, Ashley Payton, Kennel Limuel, Kenvia Limuel and Brianna Hayes; great-grandchildren, Journie Nelson, Shaniece Smith, Mariah George, Trimel Burns, Darnell Burns, Jr. and Derion Burns; great-great-grandchildren, Paisley Draper and Zayden Stafford; sister, Georgia Alford; nieces, Kenah Alford,    Annie Land, Addie Gilmore and Patricia Gilmore; nephews, James Allen, Sonny Allen, Jerome Burns, Johnny Gilmore and Jimmy Gilmore; extended family members, Kathy and Gregory Bundage and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
