Gloria Ann Scott was born on May 25, 1955 in Kountze, Texas to Kimble Scott and Mary Lois Simms. Gloria was the only child born to this union and began living with her maternal grandmother at the age of six months. At that time, her mother left Kountze in search of a different life. When Gloria’s father learned of this, he immediately began legal proceedings to bring Gloria to live with him. As her primary caregiver, a strong bond grew between she and her father. She loved, respected and adored him.
Kimble Scott worked and managed his own lumber company, which afforded Gloria a secure financial foundation. It was there, in the “country”, that she grew to love a simple life. As her father owned horses, she held a love for them throughout her life. One of her favorite movies was “Sea Biscuit”. She never grew tired of watching the magnificence of this horse. While Gloria was always a classy and polished woman, she was a country girl at heart.
As a toddler, Gloria’s mother, Augusta (the woman who nurtured and loved her), came into Gloria and Kimble’s life. She taught her the proper way for a young lady to carry herself. A loving and lasting bond grew between them. When Gloria was a teenager, Augusta moved away and relocated to California. Thereafter, Gloria and her father moved to Liberty, Texas to live with his sister, Sarah Scott Watkins.
Gloria attended Burkeville High School in Burkeville, Texas where her aunt was a teacher. She graduated in 1973. There, she led an active social life, played basketball, was the Homecoming Queen and Carnation Queen. Gloria often laughed when she was reminded that there were times when she wanted to do something because everyone else was doing it and her father would respond, “That’s not true. You’re somebody, and you won’t be doing it”.
While attending high school, Gloria met the love of her life, Amaziah Lewis. They were chosen as the Best Dressed and Most Popular Couple. Later, Amaziah Lewis became her devoted husband. They were married in Houston, Texas on December 11, 1975. This union was blessed with three children: Kimberly, Kendricks, and Kandis. Their names began with “K” in honor of Gloria’s father.
After Gloria married, her father continued to lavish her and his grandchildren with love and gifts. When Gloria was 27, her father suddenly passed away. Gloria was devastated! She sought grief counseling and eventually, she and Amaziah made the decision to move to California so they could live close to Gloria’s mother, Augusta. Prior to moving from Texas, Gloria was baptized at the 5th Ward Chuch of Christ in Houston, Texas.
Gloria suffered from a number of health issues and was often admitted to the hospital. On March 16, she again entered the hospital and said, “I am in the hospital again. I guess this is my life”. She had heart surgery. While the surgery was successful, her heart was too damaged to sustain her. She transitioned from this life on Saturday, April 13, 2024.
