Doris Wooten Obituary

Doris Roberts was born on October 21, 1927 to Walter and Cora Roberts, the youngest of eight children. She was nicknamed “Doll” which indicated how pretty she was to her parents.  From childhood, Doris learned to live with and provide for a large family, a skill she put to preeminent use throughout her life.  Strong family ties and community involvement were integral parts of her life from birth.

Doris attended school first, at Pleasant hill and later at Center Grove.  She was baptized and attended Smith Grove Church of Christ.  An intelligent, if playfully mischievous, student, Doris enjoyed mathematics more than reading and English.  She would, however, later learn to      appreciate a good romance novel.

On August 14, 1944, Doris married Earl Wooten, Jr.  They were parents to five children and supported their large family by farming cotton, corn and vegetables.  Through hard work, perseverance and determination, they substantially increased their property holdings to several hundred acres.  The farm is now in the cattle business.

At Doris’ insistence, and with Earl’s complete agreement, all five of their children attended college and obtained degrees in various fields.  After the children left for school and employment, Doris and Earl became more involved in community organizations.  They supported their church, White Rock United Methodist Church where Earl spent many years as the church treasurer.  Doris was a member of United Methodist Women, the Houston County Family and Consumer Science Educators, for many years.  They both supported the Center Grove Community Center, Fodice Cemetery and Cal Wooden Cemetery.

Doris’ hobbies mostly revolved around farm-related activities.  She loved fishing and sewing (her daughters always wore well-made, fashionable dresses), but her favorite hubby was “competitive gardening”, meaning she always wanted to claim the biggest, best and most bountiful vegetables.  While most of her garden produce was used to feed or preserve for her family, she was quite happy to share with neighbors.

Doris entered into eternal rest on August 2, 2022.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and all but one of her siblings.  She is survived by her sister, Ruthie Roberts Fance, with whom she shared a room at Winfield for the last months of her life; her children, Barbara Wooten, Sandra Jones (Ladell), Gwendolyn Scott (Wilford), Earl Wooten, II (Ruth), and Robert Walter Wooten; six grandchildren, Kimberly Jones, Stephen Jones (Camille), Andie Scott, Clayton Scott, Stefanie  Burnett (Jeremy) and Earl Wooten, IV; four great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Scott, Ethan Jones, James Burnett, Taylor Ruth Burnett and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who mourn her passing.
