Byrdell Duren, born Byrdell Walker on August 23, 1923, in Crockett, Texas, passed from this life on April 1, 2026. She was 102 years old — a century of grace, laughter, strength, and love poured into the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
Byrdell was born to Charlie Lewis Walker and Iola Walker (Hall). She was educated at Grover Black High School and furthered her training at Franklin Beauty School and an upholstery school — a testament to her resourcefulness and her dedication to craft. She was a faithful member of New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where her walk with God was the steady foundation of her life. Her commitment to that faith community extended far beyond Sunday mornings. She was instrumental in securing a historical marker for the church and contributed to the historical book documenting the rich history of Germany, Texas, alongside Willie Lee Gay and Florarean Hall Overshown. She was also a proud member of the Tawasi Ladies Social and Charity Club, reflecting her lifelong devotion to community, fellowship, and service.
Byrdell was married to the love of her life, Will Otis Duren, for over 50 years. Together they built a family and a legacy that continues to this day. She had a spirit that could light up any room. She loved to dance, and she never missed an opportunity to share family photos with anyone who came to visit. Her sense of humor was legendary. She lived by the motto: “Don’t take wooden nickels, because they won’t spend. ” And she meant it. Even in her later years, her mind and her wit remained sharp. Her granddaughter had a standing tradition, a gentle call and response to check on her alertness. She would say, “See you later, alligator, ” and without missing a beat, she would fire right back: “After while, crocodile. ”
Her home was more than a house, it was a sanctuary. Byrdell had a gift for care that went beyond obligation; it was simply who she was. She lovingly tended to elderly family members who didn’t just accept her care — they requested it, and they were adamant about it. There was no place they’d rather be than her house, and anyone who knew her understood exactly why. If you want to know the true quality of her care, just ask the Chase, Dancer, and Strong families. And it didn’t stop with family. Her door was always open to anyone who didn’t have anywhere else to go. No one was turned away. That was Byrdell.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Will Otis Duren; her daughter, Artie Lou Duren; her grandchildren, Terrance Duren, Michelle Williams, and Quannin Duren; and her brothers, John L. Walker, Albert Lee Walker, Sammy L. Walker, and Charlie Walker.
Byrdell leaves to cherish her memory her son, Ralph Duren (Jackie); her grandchildren, Shulanda Robicheaux (Adrian), Elisha Ali Duren, and Enisha Shropshire (Marcus); 6 great‑grandchildren; 4 great‑great‑grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends whose lives she touched immeasurably. A life of 102 years is not simply measured in time — it is measured in the children raised, the prayers offered, the history preserved, the dances shared, the doors opened wide, and the love that outlasts us all. Mother Byrdell Duren did all of that and more.
She finished her course. She kept the faith.
