Alvie Hammond Obituary

"A Time To Be Born…” ECCLESIASTES 3:2

On March 5, 1947, a beautiful baby girl, Alvie Joyce Malone, was born to the proud parentage of Hubert Malone and Jewel Malone in Gause, Texas. She was the oldest of four children.

“Blessed are the pure in heart…” MATTHEW 5:8

At an early age, Joyce accepted Christ at Stephen Chapel AME in Gause, Texas. She kept her faith strong and initially, when she and her family moved to Houston, she joined Brentwood Baptist Church, then Alief  Baptist Church, where she served as an usher, worked with the Silver Doves Ministry, volunteered in the food pantry, and served as a teacher for the Pre-K and toddlers. Later, Joyce moved her membership  to The Fort Bend Church, to be closer to home, where she stayed committed to serving the Lord until her health declined. She then watched faithfully online until she transitioned to be with the Lord.

“What God has joined together…” MARK 10:9

Joyce met Leon Hammond, the love of her life, at Blackshear High School in Hearne, Texas. Alvie Joyce Malone and Leon Darrell Hammond were united in holy matrimony on February 27, 1966, in Gause, Texas. Thereafter, they moved to Houston, Texas where they resided until her death. This union was blessed with three beautiful children: Leon Darrell Hammond, Jr., Kendrick LeWayne Hammond, and Chandra Joyce Hammond.

“The Lord giveth wisdom: out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding…” PROVERBS 2:6

Alvie, fondly called “Joyce” and “Speedy” started her education in Waco ISD, then San Angelo ISD, and she attended Junior High in Gause ISD. She graduated from Blackshear High School in Hearne ISD in 1965. The changes in school districts occurred because her mother died when she was 12. This change   resulted in she and her two siblings being raised by the best grandparents in the world; Professor Doyle Shelton Smith (Principal) and Mother Moze (Teacher), two transformational educators in Central Texas. They spared no expense to provide for, empower, and encourage Joyce and her siblings. Joyce was an honor student, member of FHA Club, and she played on the girls’ basketball team. She attended Prairie View A&M University. Joyce’s employment history was diverse and included working at Andy Anderson Elementary in Houston ISD as a Food Service Supervisor for 5 years. She worked for  21 years at MHMRA, now known as The Harris Center, until she sustained a medical injury.

“Just as the Son of man didn’t come to be served, but to serve; to give His life…for many” Mt 20:28

Joyce loved family and friends. Any family member moving to Houston lived with Joyce and Leon until they got on their feet or got married. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandson dearly. She loved cooking her famous, delicious Thanksgiving dressing, peach cobbler, and sweet potato pies. Everyone that met Joyce loved her sweet spirit and her beautiful smile. She was a loving, kind-hearted, and giving person who loved wearing beautiful clothes, shoes, scarves, headbands, and jewelry.

“The lord sustained me on my sickbed in my illness, now he has restored me to full health…” PS 41:3
